Hair Style Terminology

Terms and definitions to help you communicate better with your stylist and to help you to arrive at the “Perfect” hair style for you.

Term Description Examples
Asymmetrical Cut An asymmetric cut is a haircut in which the hair is cut in such a way that the hair does not have left-right symmetry and one side is cut or appears to be longer than the other.

Blended Gradual "lengthening" of the hair from the sides on up. Some salons like to use the term blended to differ from a shorter fade. These salons use the term blended when the customer doesn't want to show scalp, which is usually a 4guard and longer as opposed to a fade which shows more scalp.
Blowout A process of either blow drying shampooed hair and then shaping using a brush and hair dryer. This process can also involve straight iron or curling after the blow dry.

Blunt Cut A blunt cut is when a stylist cuts straight across with scissors

Buzz Cut Very short cut. Buzz cuts are always done with clippers only. Guards 1-8 can be used. Don’t use this term with your stylist unless you want a very short cut with clippers allover.

Disconnected A term used for a type of cut showing "contrast" between the sides and the top. Usually, one or both sides are cut with clippers up to a part and above the part is significantly longer. Most of the time there will be a side part on one side, but not always depending how one styles the hair.

Face Framing Layers Cut Face framing is when you use the front hairline perimeter to create a particular style. Example: Front layers or bangs that connect with sections from the side in a downward angular fashion.

Fade A term used to describe a short clipper cut on the sides and back with clippers "Showing Scalp". Usually, using a 3 guard or shorter is used. Fades always show a desired amount of scalp. A fade is basically a short blend.

Hard part A line “Etched” in to help to define and separate the sides from the top where the hairs is combed over from. This line can be etched in with outliners or a straight razor.

Layered Cut Hair is arranged into layers, with the top layers (those that grow nearer the crown) are cut shorter than the layers beneath.

Lob Cut The lob cut is when the length is between long hair and a bob cut. The lob cut is just above the shoulders, at shoulder level, or just below.

Low fade/blend A low fade/blend shows visible scalp only below the temple, then drops down in the back.

Mid fade Mid fades show visible scalp to temple or slightly above and is straight across in the back.

Nape Describes the area in the back of the head where the head and neck merge (neckline).

Outliners Outliners are used to "Outline" areas around the ears, neckline(nape), and sometimes the forehead line when doing shape ups. Outliners are usually called T-outliners.

Pixie Cut A pixie cut is a short women's hairstyle. A pixie is generally short in the back and sides of the head and longer on the top. Usually lots of point clips are used to add texture.

Point Clip A technique used to give "Texture" to usually straight hair. Point clip basically adds space between hair that creates the textured look.
Pompadour(Pomp) A pompadour is when the hair is styled in a high mound in the front with lots of volume and the hair can either flow straight back or back and to one side.

Razor A razor is a tool that is used for multiple purposes such as etching a hard part, shapeups, creating texture, and to remove excess bulk.
Razor Cut A razor cut is a usually a ladies haircut done with a straight edge razorblade that results in wispy strands with thinner ends.

Shag Medium length hair that covers most or all of the forehead and is combed all forward or across the forehead to one side.

Stacked bob A stacked bob is a bob that is stacked in the back. The back has gradual layers for a textured, voluminous finish

Tapered Gradual "Shortening" of the hair from the ears down to the sideburns as well as the area in the nape(neckline) area.

Textured Hair Texture is usually added to straight hair by a technique called "Point Clip". A term used to describe when strands create non uniform shape. Sometimes referred to as "Bed Head".

Thinning Shears Also called Blending Shears and texturizing shears- Thinning shears are shears with teeth. Thinning shears are used to remove bulk in thick hair, add texture, and used to help blend.

Undercut Men's A type of "Disconnect" where the hair on the sides are lifted(or put in clips) and the sides(underneath) are cut with clippers to desired guard length, then the lifted(uncut hair) is let down once underneath is cut. This process is done on both sides and back. Sometimes the back is blended rather than undercut.
